Hydroponics At Home: Getting Started Using The Kratky System
So you’re thinking of trying your hand at Hydroponics and wondering how to get started. It can be overwhelming to determine where to begin - which materials to use, which technique is best !!
Based on our experience and the feedback we’ve received from our valuable farmers and clients, we’ve found the best starting point for new growers is to use a method called the Kratky Method, named after B. A. Kratky. This is a stationary, passive, growing system with no pumps or electricity required. This option requires minimal investment, little time, and minimal maintenance.
The Kratky method typically begins with a seedling which is placed into a raft. This is similar to the Deep Water Culture (DWC) system - a standard and well known hydroponic method. What differentiates the Kratky Method and the DWC Method is that the raft for the Kratky Method is fixed on top of a water and nutrient filled tank which requires no agitation.
As the roots develop, the water level in the tank drops which creates an air zone for the roots. Once the plant is ready to be harvested, the nutrient rich water is depleted and can be replenished. New transplants can now be placed on top of the tank. This is once of the simplest methods of growing, and the ease of use is extremely beneficial to the grower.
A few challenges associated with the Kratky Method are as follows:
- The more you try to grow, the less time efficient it is
- Tank cleaning becomes cumbersome when you have numerous tanks.
- Difficult to control variables
- Water pH and nutrients need to be spot on prior to filling your tank.
- Managing temperature of stagnant water can be challenging.
- Quality raft and coverings are critical
- A greenhouse will be required to protect your system.
- Foam board (3/4”) is the most cost efficient option for raft material.
Overall, Kratky does come with a few drawbacks, however for beginners, it is cheap, easy and quick to get up and running. Give it a go and get growing !!
